Coach tours operate throughout the year, although the frequency is determined by the season and the operating company. Some tours run a few times per week whereas others run most days. Tours don’t operate on Mondays. As they cover the full day, they leave only once per day.

They offer central hotel pickups and usually have everything you need for the day included. A tour guide accompanies the group, offering the experience in a variety of languages. The downside is that you will be travelling with a fairly large group, so your access to the guide may be limited. Furthermore, the programme for the day is fixed, so you won’t have much opportunity to see what you want for as long as you want.

One of the cheapest ways to explore the Czech Republic is to take a national train. These are operated by the company Ceske drahy. There is a single direct train per day from Prague (Praha) to Cesky Krumlov. This train leaves at 09:21 each morning and takes 2 hours and 30 minutes in total. There is also only one return train from Cesky Krumlov to Prague leaving in the afternoon.

The cost of the journey is approximately €15 (CZK 400) each way per person. You are therefore likely to spend around €30 (CZK 800) for the round trip. Tickets can be purchased online. The train takes you from the city centre of Prague right into Cesky Krumlov. The trains of the Czech Republic are often clean and comfortable. However, these trains take over 2 hours and only leave once per day, leaving you with extremely limited time to explore Cesky Krumlov.

An alternative low-cost public transport method to visit Cesky Krumlov from Prague is to take a public bus. These are run by the organization Regiojet and leave from the station Praha Na Knizeci. Buses are quicker than the trains, taking 2 hours 45 mins and more accessible throughout the day.

Buses cost €13 each way per person, making them a round trip of €26. Tickets can be ordered online. This is recommended as there are less seats available, particularly at popular travel times. You will also need to pay for any attractions that you visit.

The buses leave from Prague Na Knizeci, a bus station on the west side of the river. It is accessible by the Andel metro station, which is on line B. The bus station at Cesky Krumlov is either at the train station Spicak or from the AN bus station, which is located east of the river and the city centre, next to the hospital.

Buses are the lowest cost option to travel to Cesky Krumlov and run much more often than the train. They run from a location outside of the city centre and may require some walking and taking the metro to reach the station. This option is only a transport option and doesn’t include a guide or any schedule to make it a tour.

Having your own hired car is another way that you can get from Prague to Cesky Krumlov. This option means that you can travel on your own schedule and visit for as long as you want. Car rental shops are available throughout Prague and you will find many of the well-known brands, such as: Hertz, Avis, Sixt, Europcar, Budget, ACE and more. 

The starting price for renting a car can be as low as €40 (CZK 965.80) per day, although this is subject to a lot of variability. This depends on the company you hire from, the type of vehicle you hire, the number of days you have it for, whether you pay in advance, etc. You will also need to pay for fuel costs, any tolls, and parking, making the total experience cost €90+ (CZK 2,173). As this is a transport option only, you must pay for entrance fees to any attractions and you may also wish to hire a guide.

You must have a valid driving licence that you have held for at least 2 years. This must also be an EU licence, or else have a relevant driving permit with it. You must be at least 21 years old and have with you your passport or EU identity card. 

Having your own vehicle gives you the autonomy to travel to Cesky Krumlov from Prague at your own pace and on your own schedule. You can be there for as long as you like and can explore other nearby regions. The downside is that you will need to create your own itinerary for the day, do all the research for yourself, book your own tickets for the attractions you wish to visit and find your way around yourself. This option also doesn’t include a guide intrinsically, which will result in a higher cost if you hire one.
