Discover Tanzania: Top 5 Day Trips From Dar es Salaam

Dar es Salaam is the main port of call for most people travelling to this region, as it is the perfect base from which to access Tanzania’s famous national parks, breathtaking beaches and exotic islands. Tanzania is the only country to have allocated more than 25% of its land to wildlife national parks, protected areas and marine reserves, with quite a few of these areas being within relatively easy reach from the city. There are so many exhilarating activities and trips to choose from, so we’ve found some of the best day trips from Dar es Salaam to help you decide.

Bagamoyo

Situated 62 km north of Dar es Salaam, the seaside port of Bagamoyo is a unique town rich in history, and totally worth exploring if you’re interested in cultural and historical attractions. Taking a stroll through the unpaved, narrow streets will catapult you back in time to the mid-19th century when the town was a landing site for Arabian slaves and traders. Missionaries later turned it into a shelter for ransomed slaves, aptly naming it Freedom Village. Bagamoyo’s easy-going pace and fascinating past make it a brilliant day trip to discover more about East African culture. Explore the 13th-century Kaole Ruins, learn about the town’s fascinating past in Bagamoyo Museum or channel your inner daredevil on a crocodile farm tour.

Bongoyo Island

Part of Dar es Salaam’s Marine Reserve, Bongoyo Island is a lovely little escape just 12 km off the coast. One of the closest beaches to the city, it’s a popular spot to relax, take a dip in crystal waters, go snorkelling or fill your belly with delicious seafood. If you can handle the heat, walking around the island is totally worth it. There are also huts available for those who need shelter from the sun and you can even bring your own food and refreshments if you don’t fancy eating there, although we hear the red snapper is to die for. Boats depart from the Slipway Centre and arrive on the island within 30 minutes. So if you just need a little respite away from the big city, this is the place to go.

Zanzibar

Nothing short of an exotic paradise, this Tanzanian haven located 25 km off the coast is well worth a visit. Otherwise known as Spice Island, Zanzibar was a trading hotspot on the trade route between Arabia and Africa and derived its name from being the largest producer of nutmeg, cloves and pepper in the world. This dreamy location is growing in popularity however it’s still considered to be an off-the-beaten-path experience and a truly unique destination. A day trip from Dar es Salaam to Zanzibar Island, or even a weekend excursion, is an excellent way to explore Zanzibar and admire its famous show-stopping beaches. Get your fill of history at the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Stone Town or visit the charming fishing villages along the waterfront. Finally, don’t miss out on seeing the island’s jaw-dropping beaches, go beach-hopping and marvel at the likes of Nakupenda Beach Nature Reserve and Nungwi Beach.
