Checking in at Palermo Airport

Palermo Airport departures are spoilt for choice when it comes to choosing their next destination. With nearly 100 domestic and international places to choose from, connecting with this Sicilian paradise couldn’t be easier.

Certain airlines provide self-service kiosks at the airport to help streamline your departure, as well as online check-in portals up to 48 hours in advance. When using these options, you’ll need to print off your own boarding pass and bag tags, before dropping off your luggage at one of the dedicated Bag Drop points.

If you prefer to check-in on arrival, you can use your airline’s check-in counter. As you enter the Check-in Hall, refer to one of the information screens to find the correct lane and counter. Most counters open up 3 hours before a scheduled flight departure.

Main Terminal

The Check-in Hall is located on Level 1 and the Departures lounge area, including duty-free shopping, is located on Level 2.

When to arrive at Palermo Airport?

When flying out of the airport in Palermo, departures should plan to arrive 2 hours in advance for domestic and Schengen flights, and 3 hours in advance for all other flights. The window for checking in for domestic and Schengen flights usually closes 40 minutes before departure, and one hour before international flights.

If you’ve checked in online and just need to drop off your luggage – or if you don’t have any luggage at all – you won’t need to arrive as early. In any case, it’s best to follow the airline’s guidelines on when to arrive at the airport.

What’s next?

All departures from Palermo Airport will need to undergo a security check before being allowed to enter the Departures and boarding area. After collecting your boarding pass, have it ready to show the officer at Security Clearance and then proceed to the screening line.

Place any loose items in a tray, such as keys, coins, and phones, and remove items such as watches, jackets, hats, and belts. Laptops and large electrical items should also be removed from your bag and placed into a tray separately.

New scanning machines with CT X-ray technology are slowly being rolled out across European airports. While these aim to eliminate the need for passengers to separate liquids, gels, creams, or aerosols, this has not yet been achieved. Therefore, any liquids carried in your hand luggage are still limited to 100 mL containers and must be placed into a single, transparent bag, before being placed into a tray.

For a fast and smooth experience through security, we recommend preparing your hand luggage before arriving at the airport. Lines are often lengthy during the summer period, with wait times reaching up to 30 minutes. A Fast Track lane is available for passengers of certain airlines for an additional fee of €5.50, allowing them to use a special lane and avoid long queues. This service is also available for passengers who require assistance such as pregnant women, passengers with reduced mobility, and unaccompanied minors.
