Arriving at Madeira Airport

After disembarking the plane, domestic passengers will be guided to the Baggage Claim area, those arriving from a destination within the Schengen Zone will be able to use the electronic boarding gates, and all other international passengers will be directed to the Passport Control counters.

Schengen arrivals at Madeira Airport are required to show an official form of ID, although it doesn’t necessarily need to be a passport. All other international passengers will need to present a passport with at least 6 months’ validity, and depending on your nationality and length of stay, you may also need a valid visa*.

The next step is to collect any luggage before exiting through the Customs gate. There are two corridors to choose from: “Items to Declare” or “Nothing to Declare.” We recommend familiarizing yourself with Portugal’s Customs regulations to help you decide which option is suitable for you.

*Beginning in late 2025, citizens of countries that are currently visa-exempt to the Schengen Area will need to complete an ETA (Electronic Travel Authorisation) before traveling.
