Checking in at Hamburg Airport
To help streamline the departure process and reduce wait times, Hamburg Airport offers a range of check-in options. For the organized traveler, you may be able to take advantage of the evening check-in option, depending on whether your airline offers this service. The evening check-in allows you to drop your bags the night before, within a timeframe specified by your airline, so that you don’t have to queue the next day.
Otherwise, you can check in online or use the self-service kiosks on arrival, which allow you to print your own boarding pass and bag tags (only for certain airlines). Hamburg Airport Departures also features 30 automated bag-drop machines where you can easily drop your luggage afterwards. Only certain airlines, such as Air France, Eurowings, and KLM, offer this service.
Finally, you can choose the good old-fashioned way and head to your airline counter to check in in person. As you enter the Hamburg International Airport Departures Hall, you’ll note several screens that list the counter number for your airline and flight. Bear in mind that check-in counters generally only open 2-3 hours ahead of a scheduled flight.

When planning a trip from the airport in Hamburg, departures should aim to arrive at least 2 hours in advance. We recommend following your airline’s guidelines, as some check-in procedures may open up 3 hours in advance, allowing you more time in the Departures Lounge after Security.

Once you’ve checked in, make your way to the Security gates with your mobile or physical boarding pass. Most airlines permit one hand luggage item per person, although this can vary, so it is always best to confirm with them directly.
Before arriving at the airport, separate any liquids, gels, aerosols, or creams with a volume of 100 mL or less into a transparent and resealable plastic bag. In total, you shouldn’t carry more than 1 liter of liquids, and any individual containers over 100 mL will need to be packed in your checked luggage.
Since wait times at security can exceed 20 minutes during busy periods, Hamburg Airport offers a few solutions for expediting your journey, allowing you more time to spend in the Departures Lounge.
Firstly, passengers departing from Terminal 1 can book a time slot in the Slot&Fly security line to reduce their time spent waiting in line.
The EasyPASS self-service is also available at Immigration. To use EasyPASS, passengers must hold an electronic passport, be 12 years of age or older, and be from one of several listed countries, including any member state of the EU, Switzerland, the United States, Hong Kong, China, the Republic of Korea, or Taiwan.
Similarly, Star Alliance passengers can register for the Star Alliance Biometrics Service, which links their biometric data to their passport and boarding pass, allowing quick and easy access through most security points throughout the airport.
