Layover in Budapest

Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport (BUD), or simply Budapest Airport, is Hungary’s busiest and largest transport hub. The airport features a single operational terminal, divided into two sections: Terminal 2A is used for flights to Schengen Area countries, and Terminal 2B is used for flights to non-Schengen Area countries.

Most amenities and facilities, including bars, restaurants, and shops, are found near or in the SkyCourt, a central area accessible to all passengers. A layover in Budapest can either be spent exploring each terminal and its various lounges, or if time permits, a transfer to the city center takes just 35-40 minutes, where you can check out some of the most famous sights.

Things to do at the Airport

Passengers can browse the collection of luxury and boutique stores while waiting in Terminal 2, or pick up a memento of their time in Budapest from one of the souvenir shops. Some well-known favorites include WHSmith, SPAR, Rituals, and the Heinemann Duty Free store. If you prefer to support local businesses, Dorko Clothing, Szamos chocolates, and Memories of Hungary are excellent options. 

A 2-hour layover in Budapest is the perfect amount of time to grab a bite to eat. Most cafes, bars, and restaurants are concentrated around the SkyCourt and boarding lounge areas behind the check-in zones of Terminals 2A and 2B. Options include O’Leary’s Sports Bar, Levito, Leroy, and Frank’s Deli, or if you’d like to enjoy a meal and a drink with a view, head to the outdoor terrace on the roof of Terminal 2A. 

Young children will love the interactive playground, complete with a mini plane and runway – there’s even a play-sized food truck van where they can pretend to sell carnival food. Older children can keep themselves entertained with table football, and there are charging zones where they can top up all of their electronic gadgets, as well as free WiFi. Complimentary strollers and nursing rooms are conveniently located throughout each terminal, making it easy for families to explore the facilities on offer.

There’s also an observation terrace open to all visitors at Budapest Airport, featuring an excellent viewing platform over the runway, as well as a bistro serving light bites and snacks. This is the perfect way to kill some time in between flights.

Budapest Airport transit hotels and lounges

There’s a range of hotels within a short distance of Budapest Airport, so if you find yourself with an overnight layover in Budapest or a lengthy transit, you’ll be glad to know that a good night’s rest is just a stone’s throw away. 

The Ibis Styles Budapest Hotel and TRIBE Budapest Airport Hotel are located side by side. A 5-minute walk from the terminal, both offer contemporary services with fun decor to match. While not as close, a complimentary 24/7 shuttle service also makes the Airport Hotel Budapest and Hotel Ferihegy suitable choices for a sleep and a freshen up.

For anyone with less than a 4-hour layover in Budapest, you’ll find a handful of premium and airline lounges within each terminal where you can catch up on some rest or enjoy a quiet and comfortable space to relax. Unfortunately, there aren’t any nap pods located within the terminal buildings, although you may find seating areas without armrests along the corridor connecting the two terminals. Similarly, there are no public showers in either terminal, although the LOT Business Lounge in Terminal 2B, when it reopens, will offer this service.

What to do in Budapest during a layover?

Having a long layover in Budapest can actually be a blessing in disguise. As one of the prettiest cities in Europe, having even a few hours to explore some of the sights here can be the perfect way to break up a long-distance flight. 

Situated on the scenic Danube River, Budapest is filled with stunning architecture, including the enormous neo-Gothic parliamentary building. This scene stealer is understandably one of the main draw cards to a visit here, and can easily be reached from the airport with a 40-minute Budapest Airport taxi, or the 100E Airport Express Bus, which takes closer to 50 minutes. Alternatively, you can hop straight into a waiting vehicle if you opt for a private Budapest Airport transfer with Welcome. 

Nearby, just a few minutes walk away, is the moving Shoes on the Danube Bank memorial, honoring the victims of the Holocaust during 1944-45. If you only have a 6-hour layover in Budapest, these should be top of your list before returning to the airport. For those with a few extra hours to spare, take a wander along Andrássy út, Budapest’s classiest boulevard, lined with luxury boutiques and neo-Renaissance buildings 

End your day by crossing over the river and walking up to Fishermen’s Bastion, a fairytale castle with fabulous views over the city. Tips for a Short Layover at Budapest Airport

• Stretch your legs by taking a walk along the interconnected walkway between Terminal 2A and 2B, where local artworks are often on display. 
• Connect to the free airport Wi-Fi network to download entertainment or plan your onward travel. 
• Watch planes take off from the Visitor’s Terrace on weekdays, and grab a snack from the small on-site bistro. 
• Check out the Aeropark Aviation Museum right next to the airport. A great way to kill some time for the whole family, with an on-site stimulator and the chance to step inside a real cockpit. 
• Avoid poor exchange rates at currency booths, and instead use contactless payment options where possible.

Tips for a Long Layover in Budapest

• Spend the night at a nearby hotel to catch up on some proper rest before your next flight.
• Head to one of Budapest Airport’s premium lounges, such as the T2B Plaza Premium Lounge for excellent runway views, or the SkyCourt Lounge for its spacious and modern interiors.
• If you’ve got at least 6–7 hours to spare, the Airport Express Bus or a local taxi can drop you in the city center. Be sure to plan out your list of things to see in advance and purchase tickets ahead of time.
• For stress-free travel around some of Budapest’s most famous sights, you can book a Welcome Pickups sightseeing ride for up to 9 hours for 1-4 people.

Flight Connections

Visa Required: Certain nationalities may require a transit or short-stay Schengen visa.

Average Flight Connection Time: Travel time ranges from 10 minutes between gates within the same terminal and 20 minutes between terminals. Allow at least 2 hours between Schengen and non-Schengen flights.

Minimum Time Needed to Leave the Airport: 6-7 hours

Whether you have a short or long layover at Budapest Airport, reaching your next flight is a breeze. For passengers flying with the same airline on both flights, your luggage should be checked all the way through, even when traveling from a Schengen country to a non-Schengen country, and vice versa. 

If you’re switching airlines, you’ll need to collect your luggage and either recheck it at a transit counter or follow standard Budapest Airport Departures procedures. In the event you have to leave the non-Schengen terminal to connect with your next flight, a valid visa will need to be presented for some nationalities, while others can enter the Schengen Zone under the 90-day visa-waiver agreement. 

Terminals 2A and 2B are connected via pedestrian walkways, and there are transit counters that you can approach for assistance when transferring between flights, ensuring you can make it to your next gate quickly and easily.
