Uber in Porto: Everything you need to know

If you’re planning your next trip and wondering, ‘Does Porto have Uber?’, you’ve come to the right place. Our guide covers everything you need to know about using Uber in Porto, including transferring to and from the airport, getting around the city and alternative transport options so that you can make the best choice for your needs and budget.

Is Uber available in Porto Portugal?

Yes, Uber is available in Porto, as well as other popular Portuguese destinations such as Lisbon and Sintra. There are multiple Uber Porto vehicles to choose from including UberX, Uber XL, Comfort, Uber Black and Uber Green, as well as specialised services, Uber Pet and Uber Assist.

The most classic and economical options are UberX or Uber Green (hybrid or electric vehicles) which can seat up to 4 people. Uber XL is also a great budget option, with vehicles than can accomodate up to 6 passengers. Uber Black and Comfort services also seat up to 4 people, although vehicles are a little more luxurious, with extra legroom and luggage space, higher-rated drivers, and leather interiors in the case of Uber Black.

For passengers travelling with a furry companion, Uber Pet offers the same services as UberX at a slightly higher cost, for up to 3 passengers and a pet. If you require extra assistance, Uber Assist drivers receive extra training to provide support to passengers as required.

How much is Uber in Porto?

One of the advantages of booking a ride through a ride-sharing app is the transparency around pricing. Passengers can view a cost estimate of their ride before booking, which is helpful when planning for your trip and overcoming any language barriers. In Porto, your ride will be calculated based on which service you select, the distance you’re travelling, how long the ride takes, and whether drivers are in demand at the time of booking.

Typically, an Uber in Porto costs less than a standard taxi, although Uber prices can surge at certain times of the day and during holiday periods, which can sometimes make them a more expensive option. In general, you can expect to pay €10 for an UberX from Porto Airport to the city centre, or for a short ride within the city centre, you’ll pay around €6.

*Tolls and surcharges may be added to your final fare for Uber and standard taxis.

Alternatives to taking an Uber in Porto

From the airport

The most flexible and reliable way to travel to and from the airport is via airport taxi private transfer. Companies such as Welcome Pickups offer plenty of perks such as trained English-speaking drivers, competitive fixed pricing, guaranteed on-time pickups and personalised routes on the way to your destination to give you the best introduction to the city.

Alternatively, you can take a Porto airport taxi from the designated rank outside the Arrivals Hall. Keep in mind, however, that regular taxis use a taximeter so you won’t know the cost of your ride until you arrive at your destination.

Uber is also available from the airport and generally the journey to the city centre costs the same as a regular taxi – unless prices are surging. The pick-up location for Uber Porto often changes depending on the driver, so be sure to check the app to find where you need to meet since the meeting point may be several minutes walk from the terminal.

Lastly, a metro line and multiple public buses depart from the airport to various locations within the city, offering an affordable option for travellers with little to no luggage.

*Note that Uber Black services from the airport may be limited or not available.

Getting around Porto

To get around the city, visitors can easily hail a cab from the street or find them lined up near the main plazas, out the front of high-end hotels, and at popular metro stations. In the summer, a Welcome Pickups private transfer is a great option for avoiding the stifling heat, since drivers can meet you at a time and place of your choosing with an air-conditioned vehicle.

Uber is also available for short city rides, alongside other ride-sharing apps such as Bolt, and regular taxis can be booked through Taxi-Link.

Is Uber safe in Porto?

Ubers are considered a very safe transport option in the bustling city of Porto. For peace of mind, passengers can follow their journey on the in-app map and share their ride and live location with friends and family. Furthermore, payments can be made through the app, eliminating the need to carry cash, plus driver ratings are displayed to passengers before accepting a ride.

Likewise, catching a taxi in Porto is perfectly safe, although there is the occasional instance of drivers trying to overcharge. On the other hand, they are often found to be more reliable than Uber since Uber drivers can sometimes cancel rides which can be quite stressful, especially when heading to the airport to catch a flight.
