Editor’s note: There is only one terminal building at Helsinki Airport. But what if you see something online referring to “Helsinki Airport Arrivals Terminal 2”? Well, Helsinki Airport is technically split into two sections – Schengen and non-Schengen. They are two sides of the same building. However, this is more relevant for departures. Arrivals will automatically be directed towards passport control or not, depending on whether they are flying internationally or within the Schengen zone respectively. In summary, forget about Terminal 2 – it doesn’t exist! Take a look at the Helsinki Airport Arrivals map if you don’t believe us.

Arriving at Helsinki Airport

Once you disembark into the arctic air of Helsinki, your journey will differ depending on where you’re flying from.

If you’re flying from another Schengen country, you won’t have to go through passport control. Instead, you’ll enter Helsinki Airport Arrivals directly in front of baggage reclaim. All you need to do is collect your luggage and head through to the Arrivals Hall.

On the other hand, travellers coming from non-Schengen countries (regardless of the passport you’re holding) need to go through passport control and customs.

Fortunately, border checks are quite efficient. Automated border control gates are available for EU, EEA, Switzerland, and Japanese citizens. (Make sure your passport qualifies with the “e-gate” symbol.)

If you don’t have an electronic passport or are travelling with a non-qualifying passport, there are traditional border check desks available too.

After passport control, you can head to the Arrivals Hall where you’ll find the customs office. The customs office is worth a visit if you’d like a tax refund for any items purchased abroad.

Helsinki Airport Transport

The Helsinki Airport Arrivals Hall is extremely well-connected. The most convenient mode of transportation is a taxi. There are 4 taxi lanes outside of the terminal building.

However, if you’d like to skip the queue to the taxi stand, you can book a private airport taxi with a professional transfer company like Welcome Pickups. That way, your friendly, English-speaking driver will be ready and waiting for you in the Arrivals Hall when you get there.

As for public transportation options, you have the train or bus. The train station is conveniently located under the terminal building. It takes around 30 minutes to get to the city centre. An even cheaper route is to take the 615 bus which stops outside of the airport. The journey takes around 40 minutes to get to Helsinki.
