Arriving at San Juan Airport
After landing at San Juan Airport, international arrivals should follow the signs toward Immigration, where you will need to present your travel documents.
Puerto Rico is a territory of the United States (US), which means a valid government-issued ID in place of a passport is sufficient for US citizens. For all other San Juan Airport arrivals, a valid passport and – in certain cases – a visa will be required.
The visa process for Puerto Rico is the same as it is for the US, and in most instances, travel is granted for up to 90 days. If your country has a visa-waiver program with the US, instead of a visa you will need to apply for an Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA). This also grants you up to 90 days of travel and expires after three years.
Once you have cleared Passport Control (domestic passengers can skip this step), make your way to the Baggage Claim area and refer to the screens above each conveyor belt to find your flight.
If you have any items to declare, you will need to show them to the Customs Officer, otherwise, you can enter the Arrivals Hall. Some fruit and plant items cannot be taken into San Juan, as well as articles from Vietnam, North Korea, Kampuchea or Cuba.
*Note that the Virgin Islands, Guam, and Samoa have more relaxed restrictions with regard to importing items.
San Juan Airport Transport
After landing at San Juan Puerto Rico Airport, arrivals can either hop in a local San Juan Airport taxi from the ranks outside the terminals or pre-book a private San Juan Airport transfer with Welcome Pickups.
These are the quickest ways to reach San Juan Old Town, otherwise, you can take a public bus. This option takes longer but it is also more economical.
To find the taxi stand from Terminal A, turn left after Baggage Claim and take the first exit. At Terminal B, the stand is right in front of the main exit. If you’ve booked a ride-hailing service or you’re being picked up by a loved one, you will need to exit the airport at the far end of Terminal A.
Lastly, to locate the bus stop, turn left at the Terminal B exit and follow the signs until you reach the pick-up point. Ride-hailing companies can also pick up passengers from this area. There are also three bus stops on the Second Floor, outside Terminals A, D, and E.
