Top 5 Things to Do In Hong Kong

1. Rent a Boat with Island Junks

A charming and different activity that will certainly be one to remember is either taking a cruise with or chartering, one of the beautiful teak junk ships available through Island Junks. The boats are authentic, reconstructed and definitely attractive and make a great alternative for those who want to experience something a little different while on their holiday. Offering either full day or evening charter options for groups, or a tailored cruise that even takes you to offshore islands for a delicious seafood lunch, you’ll be sure to find something that suits. This is a great activity if you’re traveling with a group of friends, as you can take a boat out for the day with some drinks and food and enjoy a side of Hong Kong that you otherwise might not have even seen! The city looks best from the ocean – take it from us! Island Junks also offers some great options for packages that include massages or drinks packages, so you can be sure to live your best lux life on the ocean.

2. Go on the Peak Tram

If you’re enjoying the thought of seeing Hong Kong from the sea, then you’ll love seeing it from the sky! Okay, it’s not the sky, but it’s pretty high up. The Peak Tram is a specialty tram journey that climbs over 396 meters above sea level. Apparently, the climb is so steep that the buildings of the skyline all appear to be tilting! Once you get to the top you can hang out in the Peak Tower, which has great restaurants, shops, and entertainment including Madame Tussauds Hong Kong. The tower also has a 360-viewing platform (called the Sky Terrace) where you can see the impressive panoramic views of the city. This is a great tourist attraction and a lot of fun for adults and kids alike! Definitely, a must-do while you’re in Hong Kong, especially at only HK$99 for a return trip, which includes the Sky Terrace viewing platform! Operating hours are nice and long, so you could even go twice to see the view both day and night!

Fun fact: The Peak Tower, which is the end destination for those taking the Peak Tram, is actually one of the most iconic and stylish buildings in Hong Kong! It features on many postcards and images of the city.

3. Visit Yau Ma Tei Theatre

For a cultural kick, check out a concert or play at this beautiful theatre. The building has a rich history; built in the 1930s, it remains the only surviving pre-war cinema in the urban area of Hong Kong. It is also been listed as a historic building since 2012. The building now serves as the home of Cantonese opera and is a favorite of the young and up-and-coming stars of the genre. Even better for those who wish to visit who aren’t Cantonese speakers; often the shows feature English subtitles. The restoration of the building has left it quite faithful to it’s original and includes many of its original parts such as the roof beams and arch over the stage, so it’s an excellent place to visit to relish the atmosphere of traditional Chinese theatre. While you’re in the area, make sure to check out the building opposite the theatre; it is a 100-year old building that houses the administration section of the theatre. This red-brick building used to be the Engineer’s Office of the Former Pumping Station in Shanghai Street and has been listed as a heritage building since 2000. It is the last remaining part of the original complex.

5. Hong Kong Ocean Park

Ocean Park, Hong Kong is a marine-life theme park that has it all! You can experience local and exotic animals on land and sea, some spectacular shows and amazing rides. Some even argue that this park is the best in Hong Kong – beating out Disneyland! But we think you should make that decision for yourself. There are two major attraction areas of the park – the Waterfront and the Summit. Both are connected via a cable car and the Ocean Express Funicular Train.

Some of the best attractions of the theme park:

Shark Mystique: a 360-degree underwater exhibit that allows you to get up close and personal with hundreds of sharks and rays! See all the different colors, patterns, and shapes of these wonderful animals!

Old Hong Kong: A great way to discover the cultural history of Hong Kong through a time-machine! Take a wander through Hong Kong from the 1950s, 60’s and ’70s on the recreated streets of these older years, complete with rides on the Heritage Tram! You can even purchase some great antique souvenirs to remind you of your trip to the past!

Polar Adventure: Check out the North and South poles in one day through the Polar Adventure! Bob-sled, get up close and personal with some King Penguins, watch the Pacific walruses, seals, foxes and more!  Make sure to visit the Tuxedo Museum to eat while watching over 70 penguins frolic nearby!

Thrill Mountain: The ultimate part of the park for anyone who enjoys high-adrenaline rides. You can dangle off the cliff in a roller coaster with no floor on the Hair Raiser or beat your friends in bumper cars! Check out The Dragon too, an old park favorite, and for a good reason – three loops and a big corkscrew twist bound to get the heart racing! If it’s a particularly hot day when you visit, cool off on the Rapids (relatively low key but refreshing nonetheless) or the Raging River for a good splashdown.

Amazing Asian Animals: a great visit for locals and tourists alike. At this exhibit, you can get a chance to glance at some of the rarest animals in Asia, and its most precious native species. Here you can see the Red Panda, Chinese giant salamanders, and even alligators! A must-see to is the Goldfish treasures exhibit where you can see hundreds of goldfish in an incredible display. You can also see the otters at Panda Village!

There are even more amazing parts of the park to explore, and more attractions to visit, such as the Rainforest, Adventures in Australia, the Ocean Theatre and the Abyss Turbo Drop! Make sure that you check the website as the park often hosts fun events at certain times of the year, such as Halloween parties, and summer Waterland events. The park is dedicated to animal preservation and protection – proceeds of your ticket go towards this conservation effort! ?
