What to Do in a Layover at Budapest Airport

Airport Survival Guide

So, you’re stuck in Budapest for a while. Most would see this as an inconvenience, but luckily for you Welcome has structured an excellent survival guide to help you make the most out of your short time in Budapest!

Overnight at Budapest airport? Is there a shower?

Unfortunately, Budapest Airport is not home to any place where you can sleep, aside from the usual padded chairs found around the airport. There is the option to pay to enter the Lounges (if you are an economy passenger), however again there are no beds available for a lie-down. If you can deal with napping upright, the security is generally tolerant of overnight guests, but be aware that a lot of things will shut down, and the cleaning at night can be loud.

Additionally, there is no place to shower at the airport (even in the lounges). If you’re after a shower (that’s not from a sink or wet wipe) then you might have to investigate spending the night in a hotel instead. (However, if you just want a hair wash, you can head to the Spa and Salon within the airport, where massages and limited hair services are available!)

Best Hotels to stay near Budapest airport!

Luckily, you don’t have to go far from the airport to find a good, reasonably priced hotel. Most hotels near the airport are either walking distance or provide a shuttle service for guests, so you can be sure to get a few hours shut-eye and not miss your flight the next morning. Some good places to try are:

  • Ibis Styles Budapest Airport Hotel – Located opposite Terminal 2 within walking distance – best option if you don’t want to go far.
  • Airport Hotel Budapest – (5 minutes from the airport) Free shuttle available for guests!
  • Hotel Ferihegy – (5 minutes from the airport) Airport shuttle available (10€ return, 6€ one way!)
  • Budapest Airport Hotel Stacio – (5 minutes from the airport) Must request a transfer but is free.
  • Sarokhaz Panzio – (2 minutes from the airport) Airport transfers are available. Cost is 8,00€ each way, but you must call when you land to arrange.

What to do if I don’t want to stay at the airport?

You’re either a person who can sit in the airport, or a person that can’t. Budapest airport houses a lot of nice shops and restaurants, but if you want to get out and see the city, one of the best ways to do it is to go with someone who knows what you can’t miss during your time there. Booking a guided tour of the city is the best way to soak up a taste of what Budapest can offer you and will help you utilise those hours where you may have been stuck in an airport!

Welcome Pickups offers just this; a great service that lets you enjoy a comfortable, reliable, safe, affordable and friendly tour around the city centre of Budapest. Welcome offers a variety of options such as The Best of Budapest in 2 Hours or even Budapest by Night if you’re only in the city for the night. If you book a transfer with Welcome, not only will the driver be awaiting you at the gate of arrival to help with your bags, but they will point out all the major city attractions and provide local information.

Luggage services at Budapest airport

Yes, you can! The airport offers luggage storage services, located on the ground floor of the SkyCourt near the reception. Rates are € 2 for one hour to € 14 for 24 hours – and there are more options available for longer terms too. As a bonus, the storage is available 24/7, so no need to worry about a late/early flight. Note that the luggage storage will only accept cash as payment, so make sure you have some on you before you head to them.
