FLR Airport Live Departures
Checking in at Florence Airport
Florence Airport – formerly known as Amerigo Vespucci Airport – is a small airport with only one terminal building. You can find the 40 check-in desks on the first floor. If you’re not sure which desk to go to, consult the screens you’ll see as you enter the terminal building.
Your check-in process will differ depending on your airline. For example, some allow online check-in which means you only have to drop your bag before heading through to the Florence Airport departures lounge.
Others may need to check-in in person at the manned check-in desks or the automated self-check-in machines.
Once you have your boarding pass – physically or electronically – you can walk towards the security checkpoint.

When to arrive at Florence Airport?
The best time for Florence Airport departures to arrive before their flights depends on where they are flying to.
If you are heading to another Schengen member country or another Italian city, 2 hours should be enough to get through security.
However, if you’re travelling to a non-Schengen country, you should arrive at least 2.5 hours before your flight. This is because you’ll need to go through passport control before you fly.
What’s next?
After checking in and dropping off your luggage, you can head to the security checkpoint.
The security area is quite small yet efficient. Some report getting through security in less than 5 minutes.
To make your security checks run smoothly, follow these guidelines:
- Make sure your hand luggage is under 115 cm in height, width and depth, and under 8 kg in weight.
- Place your liquids, aerosols and gels in individual 100 ml vessels. Then place these vessels into one plastic bag. When you get to the security checkpoint, take your liquids bag out of your hand luggage for screening.
- The liquids restrictions do not apply to baby food, baby milk and medication. If you’re carrying any of these, consult the security officer when you get to the security belt.
- Take off your outerwear (e.g. jackets, sunglasses, hats, watches, etc.) and place into a separate tray.
Once your items are placed into trays and on the security belt, you can walk under the metal detectors. Collect your items on the other side and you’ve made it through security! You can now enjoy Florence Airport departures food, shops and free WiFi.
