Uber in Milan: Everything you need to know

Whether you need a transfer to and from the airport or an in-city ride – you can find all the information you need about Uber in Milan, alternative transport options, and which is the best choice for you right here.

Is there Uber in Milan?

There is Uber in Milan but services are limited. Due to a court ruling back in 2015, the ride-hailing giant can only offer limo services in certain Italian cities such as Milan and Rome. These services include Uber Black, Uber Van, and Uber Lux and they are essentially luxury vehicles with licensed limo drivers. This makes them more costly than standard taxis and transfer services.

Uber Black is the most affordable option, providing groups of up to 4 with premium black cars, whereas Uber Lux is advertised as a luxury vehicle service with top-rated drivers. Finally, Uber Van is in the same class as Uber Black, but can comfortably seat up to 6 passengers.

How much is Uber in Milan?

The benefit of using ride-hailing apps like Uber is that the app gives you a real-time price estimate for your ride ahead of time. And usually, the service works out cheaper than local taxis. But sadly, this is not the case for Uber in Milan.

Italy’s strict regulations mean that Uber can only offer premium services, making it the most expensive choice. Not to mention the company applies surge pricing when there’s high demand, which is common in popular cities like Milan.

Nevertheless, your final fare varies depending on the type of service you select and the distance travelled. So you’ll pay approximately €120 for an Uber Black trip from MXP Airport to the city centre. Likewise, a 5-km ride in the city will cost you around €24.

*Surcharges and tolls are excluded from the final fare estimate.

Alternatives to taking an Uber in Milan

From the airport

It is possible to use Uber at Milan Airport, Linate Airport, and Bergamo Airport. However, pickup locations are subject to change and depend on your driver, so it’s not uncommon for travellers to walk quite a distance to meet their Milan Uber driver. Besides, it’s the most expensive transfer option, so it’s better to choose another mode of transport if you’re travelling on a budget.

Alternatively, you can still hop in a local taxi from the ranks outside the terminals. These taxis calculate fares using fixed rates to specific destinations and are cheaper than Uber. Just keep in mind that you may end up queueing for a while during peak season (April-October). Also, remember to avoid accepting ‘cheap rides’ from unlicensed drivers in the airport terminals.

If you’d prefer a personal meet and greet upon landing, we recommend booking a private transfer with a trusted provider like Welcome Pickups to ensure your pre-paid vehicle and reliable driver are waiting for you at the airport.

Getting around Milan

You can still use Uber in Milan’s city centre but local metered taxis are much more affordable, especially for shorter drives in the city. You can hail a taxi from the street, although Milan taxis are not very easy to flag down. Alternatively, you can walk to the nearest taxi stand or call a local service such as Taxiblu (+39 02 4040).

*If you call a radio taxi in Milan, you’ll have to pay an obligatory surcharge consisting of the time the taxi takes to reach you.

Ranks are located in Piazza Duomo, Piazza Repubblica, Piazza Duca D’Aosta, near Garibaldi railway station, Piazza Castello, and Largo Augusto, as well as outside train stations and at the airports.

You can also download other commonly-used apps such as Bolt and Free Now, and you can still book in-city rides with Welcome Pickups if you’d prefer a fixed fare and a trained, English-speaking driver.

Is Uber safe in Milan?

Using Uber in Milan is generally safe but whilst Uber has plenty of ways for you to vet their services – such as driver ratings – it’s still a good idea to remain cautious. Checking your Milan Uber driver’s rating and keeping an eye on your journey using the Uber app or Google Maps are solid ways to ensure a smooth experience.

Likewise, official taxis in Milan are pretty safe, although don’t assume your driver speaks English. Scams do exist though. As in any large city, some drivers may try to overcharge you by taking a longer route or claiming the taximeter doesn’t work. To avoid these situations, always make sure the taximeter is reset before setting off and check your ride progress in the app.
