Getting from Rio de Janeiro Airport to City

The city of Rio de Janeiro is about 16 km, from Rio de Janeiro Airport, taking 20 minutes by taxi. To get from Rio de Janeiro Airport to the city, you can have four main transportation options; a taxi, a bus, or a combination of the bus and metro.

You can either hire a taxi with a fixed rate inside the airport or you can take a metered taxi from just outside the airport for a cheaper rate. A great alternative to taking a local taxi is to book a transfer with one of Welcome Pickups’ professional English-speaking drivers and secure a competitive flat rate.

Reaching the city by bus is the cheapest way, costing just €1.50 (BRL 8). You can take Bus Line 915 from the airport and then change onto a public bus that’ll take you straight into the city. Another relatively inexpensive option is to catch a BRT bus to the Vincente de Carvalho metro station and then hop on the L2 metro into the city.

Welcome Pickups offers meet and greet services and a friendly introduction to Rio de Janeiro at the same price as a regular taxi. Click here to see the cost.

How to get from Rio de Janeiro Airport to city by taxi

Travelling from Rio de Janeiro Airport to the city centre by taxi or private transfer is the only direct option currently available. You can either book a taxi inside the airport for a flat rate or take a metered taxi from outside the airport to reach the city.

Inside the Arrivals halls of Terminal 1 and Terminal 2, taxi services are offered by several reputable companies for a flat rate, which tends to cost a bit more than taking a metered taxi.

You can also find metered taxis just outside Arrivals, including taxis operated by Aerocoop, the airport’s cooperative taxi service company. The time it takes to reach the city by taxi from the airport is largely dependent on traffic and whether you choose to take the express highway (you may be subject to paying toll costs). Via the express highway, you can reach the city in around 20 to 35 minutes.

If taking a metered taxi from outside the airport, check that the meter is turned on. You may also want to double check the route to your destination via your GPS to ensure your driver does not run up the fare.

Useful Tips

Not all taxi drivers speak English. Be sure to have your accommodation address clearly written down.

Also, the metro can be quite crowded, making it difficult to travel with luggage.
