Getting from Siem Reap Airport to the City Centre

Once a quiet rural area, Siem Reap has become Cambodia’s second largest urban centre and a popular tourist destination for people who flock to the city to visit the marvels of the Angkor Archaeological Park; it is now the country’s top tourist attraction and hosts millions of travellers all year round.

To get from Siem Reap airport to your hotel in the city centre, there are two options; taxi and “remork” (a kind of Cambodian tuk-tuk, essentially a carriage attached to a motorbike). The remork is the most affordable option, costing around €8 for the 15-minute ride to the city centre, whilst a Siem Reap airport taxi or private transfer is the fastest way to comfortably get to your hotel’s doorstep in just 12 minutes for €10.

The taxi stand is located right in front of the arrivals exit. As soon as you claim your baggage and exit the arrivals hall door, you will see the line.

Editor’s Note

Although a taxi is the most convenient way of getting from Siem Reap airport to the city, the local ‘remork’ is a popular budget-friendly option for people who travel with light luggage and would like to get a first glimpse of the city in open air conditions.

Useful Tips

Make sure you have cash (Cambodian riel or US dollars) to pay for your ride, as most of Cambodia is cash-based and Siem Reap airport taxis do not usually accept cards.
Tipping is not required, but a roundup of the fare is always welcome.
Remember that standard fares might be higher during peak hours and late in the evening.
If you already have US dollars handy, you’ll be pleased to know USD is the de facto currency for daily tourist transactions in Cambodia and is widely accepted. Even bank ATMs dispense dollars.

How to get from Siem Reap airport to the city centre by remork

Remorks (carriages pulled by a motorbike) are a huge part of Cambodia’s transportation history. Before taxis came to the forefront, remorks were the only option for getting around within cities and rural areas.

Outside the arrivals hall at Siem Reap airport, besides the taxi rank, there is also a line of remorks waiting to take passengers into town. You hire a remork just like a you would get a taxi: you go to the front of the line, agree on the price with the driver, and hop on.

Where do I get a remork from?

Remorks are lined up outside the arrivals hall exit, just like taxis. All you have to do is take your luggage and go to the front of the line to hire one.

Truth be told, remorks are not the most comfortable vehicle to travel on. There is limited legroom, and fitting the luggage on the carriage for large groups of travellers might be a problem.

Editor’s Note

Remorks are a great way to get to know the city early on if your group is small and you travel light, i.e. with backpacks or other small luggage items.

Useful Tips

Tipping is not mandatory, yet it is a nice gesture for hard-working locals who try to earn a living to support their families.
Be extra cautious with your belongings when riding a remork and make sure nothing hangs out from the carriage.
Besides the remorks lining up at the arrivals hall, there is another rank outside the airport exit. If you choose to hire one of those, be extra careful with the agreed fares.
