Getting from Tangier Airport to the City Centre

Tangier is a combination of Oriental exoticism and European charm. Marbled suks and colourful alleys give way to colonial buildings and artistic outlets. The city has been extensively depicted in fiction and film by artists such as writer Paul Bowles (the author of “The Sheltering Sky”), who fell in love with Tangier and decided to make it his home for the rest of his life.

Your very own story starts at Tangier Ibn Battouta International Airport (TNG), located 13km southwest of the city centre. The options to reach downtown are two; taxi and bus. A taxi from Tangier Airport to the city centre is the most convenient and quick option, as it will take you to your destination downtown in 20-25 minutes, with minimum waiting times, for €9.10 (MAD 100). On the other hand, the bus is a much more affordable option at just €0.50 (MAD 5) per ticket, but it entails much more hassle because the bus stop is located outside the airport, meaning you will have to walk 2km.

Welcome Pickups offers meet and greet services and a friendly introduction to Tangier at the same price as a regular taxi. Click here to see the cost.

Where do I get a taxi from?

As at most airports worldwide, TNG taxis queue up right in front of the terminal. As soon as you recuperate your bags at luggage claim, you exit the building and pass the glass door – you’ll see the rank just across. Go to the front of the line, state your destination to the driver and board the vehicle.

Convenience

Taking public transportation requires walking – possibly under the blazing Moroccan sun, so boarding an airport taxi is convenient and stress-free. You’ll get to the doorstep of your accommodation without further delays and without having to check timetables.

Editor’s Note

The local “grand taxis” (big taxis) are the beige/off-white cabs that you’ll see lined up outside arrivals. “Petit taxis” (small taxis) operate within city limits only and are not allowed to do the airport run.

Useful Tips

Always agree on the final price with the driver before getting in a taxi.
Not all drivers speak good English. For your convenience, keep a piece of paper with your accommodation's address written in Arabic or French.
Payment by card is not the norm for Moroccan taxis. Have small banknotes on you that are easy to break.
Some drivers accept payments in hard currencies, such as Euros, but remember that they’ll return your change in dirhams.
