Algiers is the capital of Algeria, the largest country in Africa. Algiers is an ancient city that dates back to the age of the Phoenicians. The present-day city was established in 944 by the indigenous North African Berbers and has since lived through Ottoman and French rule, gaining its independence in 1962. The vibrant history of Algiers can be experienced by exploring its many attractions, such as the Kasbah of Algiers, the Palace of the Raïs, the Bardo National Museum of Prehistory and Ethnography, and the Church of Notre Dame of Africa. Visitors should also carve out some time to enjoy the stunning Botanical Gardens of Hamma and to visit the Maqam Echahid, the Martyr’s Memorial.
There are two ways to get from Algiers Airport to downtown Algiers; by cab or private transfer and by bus. The second option for getting to the city centre is to take one of the three available bus services. The ride takes about 25 minutes, depending on traffic, and tickets start at €0.10 (DZD 20).
