Getting from from Puerto Escondido Airport to Playa Zipolite

Playa Zipolite is located on the Pacific coast of Mexico, around 73 kilometers from Puerto Escondido Airport (PXM). Reaching this popular wellness hub requires traveling from Puerto Escondido Airport to Playa Zipolite either via a local Puerto Escondido Airport taxi, a combination of buses, or a private transfer.

The easiest option, especially if you have luggage, is an airport taxi since you’ll be dropped straight to your hotel or apartment in around 1.5 hours. The bus, on the other hand, will require an initial shared colectivo bus or taxi into the city center to connect with a bus to Pochutla, before transferring to another colectivo for the rest of the way to Zipolite. While it is the cheapest option, it’s very confusing and unreliable, and has a travel time of at least 2 hours.

Finally, you can opt for a private Escondido Airport transfer, which includes an airport meet-and-greet, a door-to-door service, and a guaranteed on-time pickup at a competitive fixed-fare price.

Welcome Pickups offers meet and greet services and a friendly introduction to Puerto Escondido at the same price as a regular taxi. Click here to see the cost.

Editor’s Note

Useful Tips

On the main road outside the airport, you will spot green and white local taxis. These provide lower fares but are less regulated, and you will have to negotiate the fare upfront in Spanish.
Have the directions to your hotel written down in Spanish to assist your driver with any language barriers.
Unless your driver helps you with your luggage, it is not necessary to tip your driver in Mexico.

Firstly, you’ll need to take a taxi or shuttle bus from Puerto Escondido Airport to the city center, stopping at Transportes Delfines, the main bus terminal, which takes up to 30 minutes.

From there, catch a minivan or a bus to the town of Pochutla, which takes up to 1 hour and 20 minutes. Ask the driver if you can disembark at the San Antonio/El Cruce corner (you can choose to ride the bus all the way to the station, but it’s easier to begin your next leg from here).

Lastly, hop on one of the “colectivos” heading towards Mazunte, staying on board all the way to your final destination, Playa Zipolite. This last ride can take between 30 and 50 minutes, depending on how busy the traffic is and whether the driver makes any stops along the way. You can expect the total journey time by bus to be between 2 and 3 hours, excluding wait and transfer times.

*A colectivo is a shared, often open-air, truck with a tarp over the top and bench seats for 12-15 people. This is the local version of a public bus, and routes are usually posted in the front window.

-A shared shuttle bus from the airport to the city center will cost €5 (MXN 110) per person.
-A minivan or bus from Transportes Delfines to Pochutla will cost between €2.70 (MXN 60) and €3.70 (MXN 80).

This means the most you’ll pay for the whole trip using public transport is €10.50 (MXN 230). You should plan to pay for all buses and colectivos with pesos unless booked online in advance.

Where can I take the shuttle from?

The main bus station in Puerto Escondido (Transportes Delfines Pto Escondido) is located downtown opposite Chedraui. The vans and buses going towards Pochutla will have a sign indicating their destination in the front window. From Pochutla, colectivos and taxis pick up passengers from the side of the road next to San Antonio; vans will pull over when they see someone or drive past if they are full.

Convenience

While taking the bus from the airport to your destination in Playa Zipolite is by far the most budget-friendly choice, it’s also the slowest and least convenient. The trip requires several transfers, which is a hassle if you’re traveling with luggage, plus you may have to wait hours in between bus services, resulting in a journey more than twice as long as a taxi.

If you’re not under any time constraints, this option may be perfectly suitable; however, if you’d rather travel directly to your accommodation without the hassle of navigating multiple transport networks, a pre-booked private transfer is a much more straightforward option. A pre-booked transfer will also be air-conditioned.

Editor’s Note

If you're arriving after 18:00, this option isn't recommended as you may not be able to make all of your bus connections. A more reliable solution is to book a taxi or private transfer directly to your hotel.

Useful Tips

This route isn't recommended in bad weather (hot or rainy) as you may need to wait up to 1 hour in between each leg.
If you plan on traveling by colectivo, try to pack light. Space is limited in the van so you'll either have to pay for two seats or carry your luggage in your lap.
Buses from Puerto Escondido also depart from across the road adjacent to the Chedraui supermarket.
You must ring the bell to let the driver you know you want to get off. We suggest following your route on Google Maps so you don't miss your stop.
Be sure to carry Mexican pesos in smaller notes to pay for each bus as drivers may not have the correct change.
