The world’s first-ever hotel to be built completely out of snow and ice is located in Jukkasjarvi, Sweden. In 1989, huge bricks of ice were pulled from the mighty Torne River and were hand-carved into a magnificent hotel. Today, the Ice Hotel is rebuilt every year to create a unique and magical stay for all its guests. The hotel features 12 different suites and 15 to 20 hotel rooms. However, the Ice Hotel is only available from November to December, melting with the first signs of the early spring sun.
To get from Kiruna Airport to the Ice Hotel, you can either take a local taxi (or private transfer) or use the shared shuttle service provided by the Ice Hotel itself. The local Kiruna Airport taxis will charge around €22 (SEK 242) for up to four passengers and will take 15 minutes to reach the hotel. The minibus transfer from Kiruna Airport to the Ice Hotel provided by the hotel will also take 15 minutes but it’s only available up to 30 minutes after a flight lands and costs €24 (SEK 275) per person, so this form of transportation isn’t recommended as it costs more than a taxi – even if you’re a solo adventurer and it’s not a private journey.
Welcome Pickups offers meet and greet services and a friendly introduction to Kiruna at the same price as a regular taxi. Click here to see the cost.
