If you plan on visiting Mongolia’s capital, Ulaanbaatar, in winter, be sure to rug up since it holds the title of the coldest capital city in the world. Located in the Tuul River Valley, the city is surrounded by mountains and grasslands that extend outwards toward the rest of the country to its nomadic communities. It is also the starting point for the famous Trans Mongolian Railway line to China and Russia and the best place to catch up on your Genghis Khan history.
To travel directly from Chinggis Khaan Airport to Ulaanbaatar City Centre, there are two main transport options available; taxi or private transfer, and a shared airport shuttle bus. The fastest and most convenient options are to take a taxi directly from the airport taxi rank or book a private transfer in advance. The journey by car takes around 55 minutes in light traffic and a local cab will cost between €27 and €40 (MNT 100,000 – 150,000). A cheaper option is to take the airport shuttle bus, which costs €8.10 (MNT 30,000) per person and takes between 60 and 120 minutes, depending on traffic. However, the shuttle bus does not run regularly and makes several stops along the way, often making the journey longer.
*There used to be a public bus service between Ulaanbaatar city and Chinggis Khaan International Airport but it stopped running in September 2022 and no date has been given for when services will resume.
Welcome Pickups offers meet and greet services and a friendly introduction to Ulaanbaatar at the same price as a regular taxi. Click here to see the cost.
