Transfer Options from Malaga Airport to Nerja

There are two options available to transit between Malaga airport and Nerja. Taxi is the only direct route however, as a transit by bus requires a journey from the airport to Malaga’s city station, Maria Zambrano, which can be done by taxi, bus or train. A Malaga airport taxi is metered from the rank and will do the 50-minute trip for approximately 81€. In comparison, the train from Malaga station will be 4.50€, with the additional fares associated with whichever method of transport you choose from the airport to the station.

How to get from Malaga Airport to Nerja by taxi

The Malaga airport taxi to Nerja is available from outside the airport terminal and should be clearly signposted throughout the airport. The taxi rank hosts cabs that are available for both intercity and local transfers, just ensure that any taxi you approach has a meter and licence displayed in the car. The transfer to Nerja will take around 50 minutes by taxi.

Taxi fare from Malaga Airport to Nerja

The taxis from Malaga airport are metered and thus the fare can be changeable. An approximate cost for the journey will be around 81€ on a standard fare, but for the distance it is always better to check an approximate cost with a driver before you take a taxi.

Night-time rates for airport transits are in effect from 10:00pm-06:00am everyday, as well as on weekends and holidays which can up the cost to around 83€.
Holy Days or Festival Days may also affect the price and are charged at the night-time rate.

The taxis are available at the rank, outside of the airport terminal 3 in the same location as the bus and train stops.

A taxi is the only direct and also the quickest method of reaching Nerja. It is also, being available 24/7 outside of the airport, the most convenient. It is always best to pre-book your taxi to avoid any delays or fare disputes.

Editor’s Note

Nerja is a decent distance away from Malaga airport, so if you plan to arrive late, pre-book, or ensure that you are aware of the additional costs a late journey could cost you.

Always ensure your taxi turns on the meter as you enter the cab.
Only take taxis from the designated ranks at the airport and do not accept rides from locals.
The central city of Nerja is rather spread out, make sure you clearly communicate the location of your destination to the driver to avoid extra cost.

How to get from Malaga Airport to Nerja by bus

The bus to Nerja leaves from Malaga’s Central Maria Zambrano station, which will require a transit from the airport. There, you can purchase a ticket for the ALSA bus to Nerja which takes around 1 hr – 1hr 45 minutes depending on which bus you take. The bus makes regular departures every hour or so.

In order to get to Maria Zambrano, you can either take the train or bus from the airport. For the bus, take the Linea A Express which goes to the central city and will stop at the station on its route, taking around 15-20 minutes and leaving every 20-30 minutes. For the train, take the C1 line to the city centre, which also stops at Maria Zambrano and which takes around 12 minutes. It leaves every 20 minutes. Both are available directly outside terminal 3.

How much is the train from Malaga Airport to Nerja?

The train will cost 4.50€ from Maria Zambrano. Tickets are available for purchase on the ALSA bus website, or from the ticket machines at the station (which are in English as well as Spanish).

The transit between the airport and Maria Zambrano will cost an additional 3€ if you take the bus, or 1.80€ if you take the train. Tickets for the bus are purchased on board, and tickets for the train are purchased from the ticket machines in terminal 3.

Although the bus is a much cheaper option than a transfer to Nerja by taxi, it is much less convenient. Taking a taxi is the only direct route, as the bus requires an extra transfer into Malaga city, meaning more time, effort and cost associated with this method.

Editor’s Note

The bus station to alight in Nerja is apparently not very clear. Tourists have said that on the right of the station there is a cafe named Cafe Bar 7 which is easier to notice as the place to disembark.

If you want to avoid a walk, there is a taxi stand available outside the bus station in Nerja to transfer you to your chosen destination or hotel.
The ALSA bus to Nerja usually leaves Maria Zambrano from Stand 38.
Two routes are available; the direct line only has three stops and takes an hour. The other line stops more frequently and takes 1hr 45 mins.
Public holidays and weekends may mean buses don't leave as frequently.
