How to get from Mumbai Airport to Pune by train

India offers a very well-connected and wide-reaching train system throughout the country and while travelling by train may seem a little overwhelming at first, it is a unique and memorable experience that can often save you both time and money.

To travel by train from Mumbai Airport to Pune, you first need to take a bus from the airport and connect to a long-distance train at one of Mumbai’s train stations. There are two recommended routes that provide the most straightforward journey for passengers:

Option 1

  • Travel on the 365 bus, operated by BEST, from the airport towards Kurla Bus Station (W) for 25 minutes and disembark at Nehru Nagar Tilak Nagar Junction.
  • Walk 500 metres to Lokmanya Tilak Station.
  • From Lokmanya Tilak Station, take the Indian Railway MGR Chennai Central SF Express towards Chennai Central for 205 minutes. Other train options that go towards Pune include the Coimbatore Express towards Coimbatore which takes 205 minutes or the 210-minute Karaikal Weekly Express towards Karaikal.

The total journey time for Option 1 takes an average of 3 hours 55 minutes, not including wait times.

  • From the airport, take the BEST 35 bus towards Comrade P.K. Kurne Chowk for 50 minutes until you reach Veer Kotwal Udyan/Dadar Station.
  • From Dadar Station, board the Nagercoil Express towards Nagercoil Junction on Indian Railways for 215 minutes. There are several other trains travel to Pune that you can take including the Latur SF Express towards Latur (197 minutes), the Sharavati Express towards Mysuru Junction (205 minutes) and the Hosapete Express (222 minutes).

The total journey time for Option 2 is between 4 and 5 hours, not including wait times.

What is the cost from Mumbai Airport to Pune by bus and train?

Tickets for the bus cost €0.10 (INR 10) per person and can be purchased on board from the driver with cash; there is no need to book in advance. If you need to withdraw cash on your arrival, there are ATMs located in both airport terminals.

A first-class air-conditioned compartment (1AC) with a personal washbasin and all bed linen included generally costs €13.20 (INR 1,165) per person, but on occasion, a 1AC ticket for this journey can cost more. An air-conditioned berth travelling on a second-class ticket (2AC) with linen included costs between €8 – €8.50 (INR 700-745) for each person travelling. This brings the total journey cost for each person to €13.30 (INR 1,175) if travelling in first class.

Keep in mind that the 1AC tickets sell out the quickest as there are limited seats in this class available and therefore should be booked as much in advance as possible through the Indian Railway online reservation system.

The 35 bus service runs from 06:05 to 21:15, every 12-25 minutes. The 365 bus service runs from 06:13 to 22:33, every 20-30 minutes. Indian Railway services from Dadar and Lokmanya Tilak Station run at least once an hour from 12:00 to 09:00 every day.

Where do I take the bus and train from?

Since trains don’t depart directly from Mumbai Airport, you’ll first need to take the 35 bus from Terminal 1 to Dadar Station or the 365 bus from Terminal 2 to Nehru Nagar Tilak Nagar Junction and then walk 500 metres to Lokmanya Tilak Station.

Trains leaving from either Dadar Station or Lokmanya Tilak Station towards Pune depart from several platforms. Passengers should check the departures board or confirm with a member of staff at the station which platform your train departs from.

A train is the most comfortable transportation option from Mumbai Airport to Pune as you’ll be able to move about the carriage and take in some of the countryside as you travel. However, it is also the longest transport option, with transfers required and trains that can often be delayed, increasing your journey time further. There are also periods throughout the day with overall longer waiting times between scheduled services.

If you want to get some sleep on your journey, especially if travelling late at night, book a sleeper berth on a 1AC, 2AC or 3AC fare where you'll be able to fully stretch out and relax.
The 1AC air-conditioned first-class tickets have lockable compartments and are considered the best on long-distance trains. The air-conditioned two-tier class (2AC) tickets don't offer as much privacy as 1AC, but still provide a decent level of comfort for passengers and have curtains that can be drawn across each bed.
Long-distance trains sell out weeks in advance so be sure to secure your tickets as early as possible.
