Private Malta Airport transfer to Sliema: Fixed prices, benefits, and booking

A private transfer is one of the most reliable ways to get from Malta Airport to Sliema, especially if you’re arriving late, carrying luggage, or visiting during the busy summer months.

It works similarly to a regular taxi, except everything is arranged before you land, which makes it one of the best arrival experiences after a long flight. It’s also useful if you’re arriving for the first time, as you won’t need to figure out taxi kiosks, bus routes, or pickup areas once you’re at the airport.

Private transfers provide several included benefits:

  • Fixed fares paid in advance
  • Meet-and-greet service inside arrivals
  • Experienced English-speaking drivers
  • Flight monitoring for delays
  • Child seats available on request
  • Larger vehicles for groups and luggage
  • Local recommendations and travel tips
  • Free cancellation up to 24 hours before
  • 24/7 customer support

Booking your Malta Airport transfer only takes a couple of minutes through the Welcome Pickups app or website. Just enter your route, choose your vehicle, and pay. A few days before your trip, you’ll receive your driver and vehicle details, so you know exactly who’s picking you up when you land.

Prices are fixed and paid in advance, so you know exactly what you’ll pay before you even land in Malta. It also means you can skip the prepaid taxi kiosk inside arrivals, which often gets busy during the summer season when several flights land close together.

Estimated prices for your Welcome Pickups Malta Airport transfer to Sliema:

    • Sedan: 1–3 passengers, €90
    • Minivan: 4–8 passengers, €100
    • Minibus: 9–12 passengers, €140

Malta Airport meet-and-greet service for a smooth arrival

Malta International Airport (MLA) is relatively small and easy to navigate, which makes arrivals feel a lot quicker than at some larger European airports. All flights arrive through the airport’s main terminal building, and once you’ve picked up your luggage, you’ll walk into the central arrivals hall.

If you book a private transfer from Malta Airport to Sliema, your Welcome Pickups driver will be waiting inside Arrivals holding a sign with your name on it. From there, they’ll help with your bags and walk you over to your pre-selected vehicle in the nearby pickup area outside the terminal.

Because of airport traffic regulations, drivers usually can’t wait directly outside arrivals for long periods. Most vehicles use the designated short-stay parking and official pickup zones close to the terminal instead.

You’ll also be able to contact your driver through the Welcome app or WhatsApp if needed. Flights are monitored in real time too, so if your flight lands late, pickup times can normally be adjusted automatically.

*For more details on the layout of MLA Airport, you can have a look at our detailed Malta Airport guide.

Along the way, your local driver will usually point out a few local landmarks as you head from Malta Airport toward Sliema, including Valletta’s huge limestone bastions, the waterfront around Msida Marina, and the harbor views near Tigné Point and Fort Manoel.

Taxi from Malta Airport to Sliema: Costs, travel time, and what to expect

Taking a taxi from Malta Airport to Sliema is one of the quickest and most convenient ways to get into town. Taxis run 24/7 from the airport, and the drive usually takes around 20 minutes, although traffic around Sliema and nearby St Julian’s can get pretty busy on summer evenings.

Malta Airport taxis normally use taximeters, but airport rides to popular areas like Sliema can also be prepaid at a fixed rate from the taxi counter inside the terminal. The average Malta Airport to Sliema taxi cost is €20 for a standard 4-person vehicle.

*There’s no extra charge for luggage, although all bags will need to fit in the trunk/boot of the taxi.

Official airport taxis are the white cabs lined up just outside arrivals. Before heading out, you can pay at the taxi booth inside the terminal, where they’ll give you a prepaid ticket for your driver. From there, just walk outside and join the taxi queue directly in front of the terminal.

You can tip your driver in cash at the end of the ride if you’d like. It’s not expected, but rounding up the fare or leaving around 10% for good service is fairly common.

Because Malta International Airport is relatively small, taxi queues can build up quickly during peak season, which is between July and August in Malta.

Also, if you’re traveling during peak commuter hours (roughly 06:30–08:30 and 16:30–18:30), it’s worth allowing a bit of extra time, especially around Sliema and Valletta where traffic can get pretty heavy.

There may be a longer wait for an available cab in the summer. Especially during this busy season, you may want to book a private transfer in advance to skip the taxi queue.

Bus from Malta Airport to Sliema: Routes, travel time, and ticket options

Malta’s Airport Direct (TD) buses connect the airport with some of the island’s busiest tourist areas, including the coast around Sliema and St Julian’s.

TD3 direct airport bus

The TD3 is the only direct bus from Malta Airport to Sliema, and it’s the option most travelers use if they’re relying on public transport. The journey usually takes around 30–40 minutes, depending on traffic and where exactly you’re staying in Sliema.

The route stops at several points around the area, including:

  • Torri
  • Chalet
  • Ferries

“Chalet” is one of the most central stops, close to the waterfront promenade, although it’s worth checking which stop is closest to your hotel or apartment before traveling.

The buses are super easy to spot thanks to their green and white colors, and the airport bus stops are located directly outside the arrivals area with clear signs showing the way.

Tickets cost €2 in winter and €2.50 during summer for a single adult fare. You can pay on board using a contactless card or cash.

If paying cash, the driver will give you a paper ticket, which then needs to be validated using the machine near the front of the bus. You can also buy your tickets at the Malta Public Transport booth inside the arrivals hall.

If you plan on using Malta’s buses regularly during your stay, it may be worth picking up a travel card instead of buying single tickets each time. The most popular options are the 7-day Explore Flex card (€27 for adults / €7 for children) or the 12 Single Day Journeys card (€19).

*Malta Public Transport also has a useful mobile app available on both Android and iPhone. It’s handy for checking live bus times, routes, and nearby stops while you’re getting around the island.

Alternative route: TD4 + Route 13

There’s also an alternative route where you take the TD4 airport bus to Valletta and then switch to the No.13 bus to Sliema. It works fine if you’re planning to stop in Valletta first, but for most travelers, it’s a slower and less convenient option than the direct TD3.

The first part of the journey on the TD4 takes around 15–20 minutes and drops you near Valletta Bus Station at the “Valletta B1” stop. From there, you’ll need to wait for the No.13 bus toward Sliema, which usually takes another 15–20 minutes once on board.

In total, the journey normally takes around 40–50 minutes, although it can easily take longer if there’s traffic or a wait between buses.

Because this route involves changing buses, it’s not the easiest option with luggage, especially during the hotter months when buses are busier, and standing is pretty common.

Each bus ticket costs €2 in winter or €2.50 in summer, so you’ll pay around €4–€5 total for the full journey depending on the season.

Cost

€2.50

Trip Duration

30 Min.

There is a wait time of up to 30 minutes for the TD3 bus.
