You will first take the R2N RENFE train to the Estacio Sants (Sants Train Station) in the city center of Barcelona, which will take 19 minutes. Then, you will walk 15 minutes to the Plaza España train station. From here, you can hop on the FGC R5 train directly to Montserrat.

*If you wish to take the cable car up to the monastery, you will get off at the Montserrat-Aeri station. From here, you will see access to the cable car that leads up to the top of the mountain. The cable car adds around 20 minutes to your journey. 

How much is the train from Barcelona Airport to Montserrat?

A one-way ticket on the R2N train from Barcelona Airport to Estacio Sants will be around €5. This can be purchased from the automatic ticket machines located inside the T2 train station. The ticket machines accept card and cash payments, from €5, €10, €20 bills.

The cost of a ToT Montserrat ticket for the R5 train will cost €8 for adults and €6.50 for senior citizens. The ticket includes a return journey to Barcelona, the cable car ride up to the monastery, access to the Montserrat Museum, and a free lunch.

Where do I get the train from?

The Barcelona train station is located in Terminal 2. You will take the stairs or escalators down to departures and will follow signs for ‘RENFE’ along a covered bridge. At the end of this bridge, you will walk down the stairs and enter the T2 train station. Check the notice boards to find the platform from which the R2N train will be leaving.

If you land in Terminal 1, you will need to take the free shuttle bus to Terminal 2 first. The shuttle bus is available 24 hours a day and leaves every 7 minutes.

Once you arrive at Estacio Sants in Barcelona City, you will need to walk around 15 minutes to Plaza España to find the correct train station for the R5 train. The Plaza España train station shares an entrance with the Metro. Once inside, check the live monitors for the correct R5 platform.

Taking the train is a comfortable public transfer option as the carriages are spacious and have luggage storage for larger items. However, as this transfer option isn’t direct, and will need you to walk with heavy luggage through the busy city center of Barcelona, it’s definitely not the most convenient way to reach Montserrat.

There’s no direct bus from Barcelona Airport to Montserrat. You will first need to take the Aerobus from either T1 or T2 to Plaza España in the city center of Barcelona, then walk to Estacio Sants to catch the Autocares Julia Bus to Montserrat. The total journey will take around 2 hours.

The Autocares Julia Bus will take you all the way to the Plaza del Funicular, which will give you direct access to the cable car up to the Montserrat Monastery.

Where do I get the bus from?

The light and dark blue Aerobus leaves from both Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 at Barcelona Airport. When you leave the arrivals gate, you will see signs clearly marked for this service and the bus stop will be just outside of the Arrivals Hall.

Once you reach Plaza España in Barcelona, you will disembark the bus and walk around 5 minutes to Estacio Sants to take the Autocares Julia Bus. This bus stop is located just outside of the station close to Plaza España.

*Arriving at least 15 minutes before the Autocares Julia Bus leaves is important to ensure you don’t miss the bus. It will be another 24 hours until the next bus comes.

Taking the bus is the cheapest public transfer option, usually used by solo travelers. However, as there’s no direct Barcelona Airport to Montserrat bus, it’s a slow and cumbersome way to travel.
