Windhoek taxi prices

Local Windhoek taxi drivers calculate their final fares depending on the distance to your end destination, the amount of luggage you have, and the time of day. For example, getting from Hosea Kutako International Airport to the city centre would likely cost you around €19 (NAD 300). That is a 45-minute journey across 45 km. A much shorter journey like a trip from the famous Christuskirche Church and the Windhoek Railway Station will cost you less than €1.90 (NAD 30).

Windhoek taxis have a base price of €0.65 (NAD 13) to start your trip and roughly add an extra €0.65 (NAD 13) per km of driving.

It’s common practice to agree on a price for the taxi trip before you take the taxi. To ensure the best rate, don’t skip this step. If you know when and where you’ll be needing a ride you can also book in advance with Welcome so that you can relax knowing your transfer is taken care of.

What our customers say about Welcome

How to get a taxi in Windhoek

When you’re ready to start exploring the beautiful city of Windhoek, there are hundreds of taxis around. Although you can hail taxis in the street, it’s generally not recommended for tourists, as taxi-hailing has been linked to thefts. There are taxi points at the airport and Windhoek Railway Station.

As a traveller new to the city, however, it’s safer to book in advance with a top-rated company or call a taxi through a private taxi provider using one of the following Windhoek taxi numbers:

Radio Taxi Windhoek: +264 237 070
White Rhino Taxi: +264 221 029
Prime Radio Taxis: +264 272 307
Express Taxis: +264 239 739

Windhoek taxi tips

  1. Avoid hailing a taxi on the street. Call a local phone dispatch taxi company instead or book any rides in advance.
  2. Pay your taxi driver in cash as few drivers accept credit or debit cards.
  3. Ask your hotel to arrange a transfer for you when needed, or ask for trusted local taxi numbers.
  4. Agree on the fare before you take the taxi by telling your driver the final destination and asking for a cost estimate.

Wheelchair-accessibility taxis in Windhoek

Options are limited for wheelchair-accessible taxis in Windhoek. Most taxis are sedan vehicles with four-passenger seats and they are not automatically equipped for wheelchairs. However, you can book a larger taxi in advance with a local company or specialised provider to ensure all your needs are catered for.

Windhoek taxi safety and complaints

Generally, Namibia is a welcoming country which extends to its taxi drivers. However, hailing a taxi on the street has been linked to overcharging incidents against foreign tourists in the past. So it’s recommended that you always call a renowned taxi company or arrange a pickup online to get around Windhoek.

If you experience any issues while taking a Windhoek taxi, you can contact the Windhoek City Police Service at +264 061 290 2911 or toll-free at +264 302 302.

Remember to note the driver’s ID number and license plate before making a complaint to support your case.

Frequently asked questions

How do Windhoek taxis calculate their fares?

Taxis in Windhoek calculate their fares by distance and the time of day. Larger vehicles may also have a higher base rate and you may need to pay additional luggage fees. Some drivers may attempt to charge you per person but this is not common practice. Instead, seek a taxi that will charge you for the ride. As a rule of thumb, it’s best to speak to the driver and agree on a fare before setting off.

How can I get a taxi in Windhoek?

You can hail a taxi on the street or you can call a Windhoek taxi number. Hailing a taxi is generally not recommended for tourists. The largest taxi company is Windhoek Radio Taxis (+264 237 070). Alternatively, White Rhino Taxi (+264 221 029), Prime Radio Taxis (+264 272 307) and Express Taxis (+264 239 739) are reportedly reliable too. If you’d like to book a private transfer, we recommend you choose a highly-reviewed, trustworthy company like Welcome Pickups to help you get around the city with ease.

Do I need to tip my Windhoek taxi driver?

It’s customary to tip for good service in Namibia, but it’s not obligatory. If you receive good service from a taxi driver, tipping around €0.25-0.75 (NAD 5-15) is the usual rate. Always tip in cash and try to use only Namibian Dollars or South African Rand. Some drivers will accept US Dollars or British Pounds, but this is rare.
