Taking a taxi in Amman
If you’re eager to explore all of Amman’s most famous landmarks, hopping in an Amman taxi is the best way to do so. With more than 11,000 air-conditioned taxis operating in the city, and given public transport is somewhat limited, taxis are a popular and convenient way to get around for both locals and tourists.
Regular yellow taxis are comfortable and air-conditioned, seating up to 4 passengers. Easily recognizable by a green logo on the front side doors and rooftop ‘TAXI’ sign, taxis can be flagged down on the street or found at taxi ranks outside transportation hubs, shopping malls, and tourist hot spots. Furthermore, taxis can be booked over the phone or via one of several taxi apps. A popular option is to pre-book an Amman Airport taxi or an Amman in-city taxi with Welcome Pickups.
*There is a second type of taxi in Amman called ‘service taxis’. These white taxis are a shared service that operates along a fixed route with set prices.

Amman taxi prices
Taxi prices in Amman are calculated using a taximeter and all drivers are legally required to use one. Fares are calculated based on the distance traveled, as well as time spent waiting or in traffic.
Current Aman taxi rates:
Base Fare: €0.45 (JOD 0.35)
Price per km: €0.76 (JOD 0.60)
Waiting time per hour: €6.35 (JOD 5)
There is also a minimum fare rate of €1.30 (JOD 1) for each ride and after 21:00 each night, Amman taxi rates increase by 20%, not including road tolls.
Overall, taxis in Amman are fairly cheap and you can get across town for around €4 (JOD 4). The only exception to using the taximeter is when traveling from Amman Airport, where fixed fare rates have been put in place by the government. You can also pay for your Amman taxi with a credit card when using an official Amman Airport taxi.

How to get a Taxi in Amman
If you want to get around the city comfortably and hassle-free, then choosing to travel by taxi is your safest bet. Taxis can be hailed from the street by waving your arm when you see the ‘TAXI’ light lit up, or taxis may beep at you as they drive nearby to let you know they are available.
Otherwise, you can easily walk to a taxi rank in Amma. Official taxi stands are marked with a brown sign which says ‘Taxi’, however, there are plenty of unofficial taxi stands all around the city. These are most often found at major landmarks, hotel chains, and malls, i.e. at the Abdali Mall. Most drivers can speak a little English so always check when taking one from a stand that the meter will be used.
How to get a taxi from Amman Airport
As you exit the Arrivals Hall you’ll find the designated taxi stand near the main road. Before jumping in a vehicle, go to the taxi booth where you’ll be assigned a driver and handed a ticket. Note that official airport taxis may not always be yellow, and they may have ‘airport taxi’ written on the vehicle. Taxis from the airport are available 24/7 and the 30-minute ride from Amman Airport to the city center will cost €28.50 (JOD 22.50). If you’re transferring straight from Amman Airport to Petra, the fixed rate fare is €97.60 (JOD 77).
How to get a taxi from Abdali JET Bus Station
If you’ve just arrived on a bus, you’ll either be dropped off on the main road, or around the back in a larger car park. If this is the case, make your way to the bus station office where taxis park alongside the main road waiting for passengers. From there to the city center takes around 10 minutes and should cost about €2.60 (JOD 2).
How to get a taxi from the Citadel (Jabal al-Qala’a)
After exploring this huge complex you can relax in a taxi back to the city center. There is a signposted taxi stand conveniently located opposite the main entrance, along Museum Street. From here to downtown or the Roman Theatre takes about 10 minutes and shouldn’t cost more than €3.80 (JOD 3).
How to get a taxi from 7th Circle (Waha Circle)
If you’re planning on getting around the city using a mix of transportation services, you’ll more than likely be dropped off at 7th Circle at some point. Taxis are most commonly found near the Zahran Street exit, right by the plaza. Otherwise, try waiting by one of the pedestrian crossings as this makes it easier for a taxi to pull over and pick you up.
How to get a taxi from King Abdullah I Mosque
If you’re departing the mosque (one of the few open to non-Muslim visitors) and need to find a taxi, your best bet is to head to the nearby Abdali Mall. Keep in mind if it’s a hot day that the mall is a 10-minute walk away so you may wish to arrange a taxi in advance instead.
Most popular taxi apps in Amman
Arranging a taxi using an Amman taxi app is very common in Amman and there are several companies that help you to do so. Petra Ride can be used to hail a regular taxi service, whereas Careem, Uber, and Jeeny offer ride-hailing services, connecting passengers to individual drivers, and in the case of Jeeny, to regular yellow taxis too.
If you need to travel to or from Queen Alia International Airport then we suggest booking your taxi in advance with Welcome Pickups. This way, you can select a time and vehicle that suits your needs for a fixed fare price with a driver who knows the roads well, ensuring a seamless transfer.

Amman taxi tips
- While women should sit in the back seat of the taxi, it’s polite for a man to sit in the front seat, even if they are the only passenger.
- Most drivers speak English but you might also want to learn some phrases in the local language before your arrival. You can also note down your destination on a piece of paper and hand it to the driver when you enter the cab or show it to them on your phone.
- Although sedan taxis can seat four passengers, drivers may decide there is only room for three, based on passenger and luggage size.
- Credit cards are widely accepted, but it’s recommended to carry some cash with you just in case.
- Try to have some change handy as drivers typically don’t accept anything larger than a 5 JD note.
- Even though taxis are required to always use the meter, this rule is often relaxed late at night when it’s common to negotiate a fixed fare instead. Just be sure to agree on a price before departing.
- Tipping isn’t required or expected although drivers often round up the fare a few fulus or piastres to save giving change.
- When exiting your taxi, close the door as gently as possible; it’s impolite to slam the door.
- Pre-book a taxi with Welcome Pickups to ensure you have a professional, licensed driver and are not overcharged.
Wheelchair Accessible Taxis in Amman
Unfortunately, the standard taxis in Amman aren’t equipped to transport wheelchair users. However, you can arrange your transportation in advance with an airline company called Royal Jordanian that can arrange special transfers for people with mobility difficulties and offers wheelchair-adapted vehicles. If you want to use a conventional cab instead, you can fold your wheelchair and store it at the back of the vehicle.
Safety and complaints for Amman taxis
Although taking an Amman taxi is usually extremely safe and affordable, if you find yourself in an uncomfortable or unsafe situation, or have an altercation with a driver, be sure to note down the taxi driver’s name, ID number and license plate. You can then walk to the nearest police station or contact the taxi company directly if you wish to file a complaint.
