How to get a taxi in Medellin

There are two types of Medellin taxis: white taxis and yellow taxis. White taxis have an agreement to serve the airport, and three companies offer white airport taxi services: Acoa Taxi Aeropuerto, Aerotaxi, and Rápido Medellin Rionegro. These taxis are mainly used by foreign travellers to-and-from the airport.

If you are travelling around the city, taxis are very easy to find as there are over 30 taxi companies in the Medellin metro area; during the day you can hail a taxi directly from the streets if you see that the vehicle is vacant. Nonetheless, during the night, it is best to either go to the closest official taxi rank or to directly call a taxi company, as hailing a taxi at night can be dangerous. Going further, if you call for a taxi, the service provider will send over a secret code to be given to your driver, this is to confirm that you are the same person that ordered the taxi.

Medellin Taxi Tips

  1. Make sure your Medellin driver resets the taximeter to the base fare before you begin your journey.
  2. Tipping your taxi driver in Medellin Columbia isn't common, but is always appreciated. Most passengers round up their end fare to the higher amount.
  3. All tolls along the way are payable by the passengers.
  4. Unfortunately, most Medellin taxis do not accept credit card payments, only cash payments in Columbian Pesos

Wheelchair Accessible Taxis in Medellin

Unfortunately, finding a wheelchair accessible taxi in Medellin is very difficult. Most of Colombia’s taxis are small vehicles that are not easy to get in or out of and often have little space for wheelchairs or other bigger items. Moreover, only a very small amount of private companies offer this service, and you would need to pre-book your wheelchair accessible taxi online.
