How to get a taxi in Liberia, Costa Rica

Getting around by taxi in Liberia couldn’t be easier, with hundreds of taxis available 24/7 to get you from A to B as quickly as possible. There are two types of taxis in Liberia; airport taxis which are orange with an official logo on the sides and regular taxis which are red with a yellow triangle on the door. If you look closely at the yellow triangle, you’ll find it states the taxi registration number and the area it is allowed to operate in.

To take a taxi, look for the ‘TAXI’ light on top of the roof and if it is free, you can flag it down in the street. Alternatively, you can walk to one of the designated taxi ranks throughout the city; these are found at transportation hubs, shopping malls and popular tourist spots. At night, it can be more difficult to hail a cab from the street, so instead, you can phone Taxi Cab Liberia on +506 8390 0935 to request a pickup – although there may be extra charges for this service.

Since Costa Rica is known for sudden downpours of rain, the last thing you want is to be stuck without a ride, so for a more reliable option 24/7, you can arrange a private transfer in advance.

Liberia taxi service tips

  1. Drivers might not have change for large notes; try to keep some coins or smaller denominations of the local currency on hand.
  2. For longer journeys or trips with multiple stops, it is best to agree on a price upfront with your driver.
  3. Check that the meter has been reset to the base fare rate before beginning your ride.
  4. Only accept a ride from authorised taxis that are red with an official yellow triangle on the doors and roof.

Wheelchair accessible taxi in Liberia, Costa Rica

The Liberia taxi service has vehicles available to accommodate passengers with limited mobility or disabilities and the rates for these taxis are slightly lower than those of a regular taxi. You can easily book an accessible vehicle online or phone Taxi Cab Liberia directly at +506 8390 0935. Booking ahead of time and specifying your requirements is recommended.

Liberia taxi safety and complaints

While the official Liberia cab service is heavily regulated and therefore safe for passengers, pirate taxis are quite common. Pirate taxis are unofficial vehicles that don’t use a meter and are known to charge higher than normal rates, especially when it comes to tourists. Always choose out of the official red taxis with the signature yellow triangle displayed on the vehicle, and check that a taximeter is installed.

Unfortunately, official taxis are also known to sometimes overcharge by claiming that a road is closed due to roadworks and subsequently take a longer route to reach your destination. If you feel that you have been overcharged, or made to feel unsafe during your journey, take note of the driver’s registration number written on the vehicle, as well as the licence plate, and make a complaint directly to the company or to ARESEP, the official Regulatory Authority of Public Services at +506 (800) 0273 737.
