Tunis Taxi Prices

Tunis taxi prices are much cheaper than your average fares in Europe or America. Apart from at the airport, where drivers charge using a set fare, taxis in Tunis use a taximeter to calculate their fare. There are two different taximeter rates; one during the day (6:00 to 21:00) and one that is 50% higher at night (21:00 to 6:00). The cost of a Tunis taxi in the city centre is as follows:

Base rate day: €1.45 (4.70 TND)

Base rate night: €2.20 (7.05 TND)

Price per km day: €0.14 (0.45 TND)

Price per km night: €0.21 (0.68 TND)

Bear in mind that there are additional fees for things such as luggage items (€0.15 (0.50 TND) per piece), extra passengers over the first three, and keeping your driver waiting for an hour (€6.20 (20 TND)).

How to get a Tunis taxi

There are thousands of taxis driving around Tunis, readily available for you to hail in the street. You simply need to look out for the yellow cars and hold out your hand when you spot an empty one. If you’d prefer, you can also walk to one of the many taxi stands located around the city. You can find designated Tunis taxi stands at the airport, outside the main shopping streets, Tunis Mall, Byrsa Hill, the Roman Ruins of Sufetula, Le Palmarium, all the popular tourist stops and the main transport hubs.

Your final option is to call one of the local Tunis taxi services and arrange for your pickup. This can be done by calling one of the official taxi companies yourself or by asking your hotel reception to do it for you. However, it’s worth keeping in mind that the taxis ordered by phone will start running the meter as soon as they set off to collect you, so this could increase the Tunis taxi prices by a lot.  Some of the well-known phone taxis in Tunis are:

Allo Taxi Tunis: +216 71 233 400

Tunisie Taxi: +216 50 222 151

Allo Taxi Tunis: +216 71 233 400

Tunis Taxi Tips

  1. Ensure your driver resets the taximeter to the correct fare before beginning your ride.
  2. Each Tunis taxi can take up to 3 passengers as standard. Larger minivan taxis can take more people but charge an extra fee for every person over the first 3.
  3. Taxis in Tunis don’t accept card payments, so be sure to carry change with you.
  4. Not all Tunis taxi drivers speak English, so be sure to write down your destination or show it to them on a GPS tracker like Google Maps.
  5. Taxi drivers in Tunisia don’t expect tips, but if their service was enjoyable, you can round up your bill.

Wheelchair accessible taxis in Tunis

The standard taxis in Tunis aren’t wheelchair accessible. If you’re in need of an adapted vehicle with a ramp or lift for a wheelchair, you will need to book with a private company such as Wheelchair Accessible Holiday Taxis or Tunisia Airport Transfers. They both have fully fitted Tunis taxis with plenty of space for a wheelchair user and their companions. To book, simply visit their respective websites or call them on +44 0800 622 6000 (Wheelchair Accessible Holiday Taxis) or +216 20 665 866 (Tunis Airport Transfers).

Tunis taxi safety and complaints

The local taxis in Tunis are usually very safe, the only thing you need to be aware of is scams for money. Sometimes your driver may rig their taximeter to show a higher base or price per km, other times they will refuse to use the meter and try to give you an inflated set-fare (especially at the airport). If this does happen, or if you feel unsafe at any point during your journey, be sure to take a photo of your taxi driver’s ID, taxi number and name, then report it to the local authorities.
