Getting a taxi in Saint Martin

Getting around the Caribbean island of Saint Martin/Sint Maarten by taxi is the easiest and quickest way to visit the sites and incredible beaches that the country has to offer. Taxis are plentiful and available 24/7 and are by far the most popular choice for both tourists and locals. Saint Martin taxi prices are set by the government and vehicles can seat between 4 and 15 passengers, so even large groups can stick together.

There are over 500 licensed taxis available on the island, which can be recognised by the letters ‘TX’ appearing on the number plate or by the company logo or uniform. Unlike in other countries, hailing a taxi service in Saint Martin isn’t that common. Instead, taxis can be found at designated taxi stands, booked in advance, or arranged over the phone. Furthermore, hotels, bars, and restaurants are always happy to help, so finding a taxi is never too difficult.

How to get a taxi in Saint Martin

Although it’s possible to hail a taxi from the street in Saint Martin, it’s more common to pick one up from a taxi rank or book one over the phone. Nevertheless, if you do spot a vehicle with either a ‘TAXI’ sign on the roof or ‘TX’ featured on the number plate, you can simply hold out your arm for them to stop. Keep in mind that in these instances, there may already be passengers in the vehicle that you would share the ride with and be charged on a per-person basis.

Taking a cab from an official taxi rank is a reliable and safe option, although there are only a handful across the island. Other than the two airports, you can also find taxi ranks near the main square in Philipsburg, the courthouse, and the dock in Marigot. Otherwise, taxis are known to hang around hotels and beaches, waiting for passengers.

How to get a taxi from Princess Juliana International Airport

The taxi rank at Saint Martin’s main international and domestic airport is located right in front of the terminal building. As you exit the Arrivals Hall, you will immediately spot taxis lined up outside. Taxis at the airport are operated by the Airport Taxi Association and are available 24/7, although they are more abundant when a flight is scheduled to land. From here, you can travel to popular destinations such as Saint Martin Airport to Philipsburg and Marigot for the fixed fare price of $20 (€18.30).

How to get a taxi from L’Esperance or Grand Case Airport (SFG)

If you’re flying in from Martinique, Guadeloupe, or St. Barts, you’ll likely land at Grand Case Airport, which is located 30 minutes from Saint Martin Airport. While there is a taxi stand located right in front of this small airport terminal, there are generally only a few, if any, taxis waiting on arrival. If you do land here, it’s best to book a ride in advance, or you can speak to someone at the information desk on arrival. Since prices are fixed, you’ll pay the same amount to the center as you would from Saint Martin Airport.

How to get a taxi from Philipsburg

If you need to catch a taxi from the Dutch capital of Saint Martin, you’ll need to head to Cyrus Wathey Square which is considered the town center of Philipsburg. Taxis departing from here will take passengers anywhere on the island for a set rate fee determined by the zone of your destination. For instance, from Philipsburg to Orient Bay, you’ll pay $30 (€27.50), and to Marigot, you’ll pay $20 (€18.30) for two passengers.

How to get a taxi from Marigot

To catch a taxi from the other capital of Saint Martin, Marigot, you will need to head to the Anguilla boat dock which is located a block away from the main square. Taxis will be parked up along the street behind the dock; you may need to approach the vehicle or driver to ask if they are available. Remember to look for the ‘TX’ number plate since taxis can be any color or make.

Most popular Saint Martin taxi apps

In a bid to keep earnings within the community and to ensure there is enough work for local taxi drivers, there isn’t a Saint Martin taxi app or ride-hailing service available on the island. However, it’s possible to book with a taxi driver directly by contacting them via the We Are SXM! local tourism page.

Welcome Pickups also provides a reliable airport taxi service to and from the airport. Rides can be booked in advance at a location and time of your choosing for a competitive fixed fare price so that you can relax knowing your trip is all taken care of.

  2. Most taxi drivers in Saint Martin only accept cash. The most widely accepted currency is the US dollar.
  3. French and Dutch are the official languages of Saint Martin, however, English is widely spoken so there shouldn't be a problem communicating with your driver.

  5. Always confirm the price with your driver before starting your trip.
  6. Taxi fares may vary between the French and Dutch side of the island.
  7. Taxi drivers must undergo regular checks and have a clean driving record.

Wheelchair-accessible taxis in Saint Martin

Most taxis on the island are large vans or minibuses that can easily store a transfer wheelchair, as can a regular sedan taxi, however, these vehicles are not equipped with ramps.

Saint Martin taxi safety and complaints

The only issue you may encounter is unofficial taxis posing as legitimate drivers which is why it is best to only accept rides from designated taxi stands or to phone one directly.

If you do encounter any issues, you can either contact the taxi company directly to make a complaint or the local police at + 0590 (87) 88 33 in Marigot or 911 in Philipsburg. Be sure to take down the driver’s name and registration number and request a receipt.
