Taxis in Conakry
Conakry is one of those unique cities that you never forget once you’ve visited. With very few tourist attractions and a buzzy rhythm, it’s a great place to experience Guinean life in all its glory.
The main method of travelling around Conakry is by taxi. There are two types of taxis available: taxi bike and taxi car. Taxi bikes are readily available and cheaper than taxi cars. Taxi cars tend to be shared rides with multiple people. If you want a private taxi in Conakry, you’ll need to pay a “déplacement” fee.
You can hail either of those types of Conakry taxis on the street (although it is not recommended for tourists), call a private taxi number, or pre-book a private transfer to ensure safety and comfort.

Taxi cost in Conakry
There are no set fares in Conakry and there are no taximeters either. The taxi cost in Conakry is completely dependent on how well you negotiate with your driver. The custom is to agree on a price before you begin your journey. Tourists often get taken advantage of with this system as it’s difficult to know how much each ride should cost. As a ballpark, a trip from the city centre to the airport, and vice versa, should cost around €3.50 (GNF 33,500), but in general, checking with your hotel concierge would be helpful, so that you get an estimation of the cost and feel more confident about whether the quote you receive is reasonable or not.
Keep in mind that if you are travelling by taxi car and don’t want to share, the “déplacement” fee is totally at your driver’s discretion. If you’d prefer a competitive and fair set price you can rely on, you can book a comfortable, private transfer with an international provider like Welcome Pickups instead.

How to get a taxi in Conakry
You can hail a taxi bike or taxi car on the street, but this is not particularly recommended for tourists. Some of the local drivers are often unqualified, unlicensed, uninsured or a combination of all three. To an extent, this method of travel is part of the cultural experience, but it does leave you vulnerable as a newcomer to the city. Private transfer companies are considered much safer for your Conakry taxi service.
There are also trusted taxi companies in Conakry that accept pickup requests over the phone, although bear in mind, that sometimes there is an additional booking fee for such services. If you wish to call for a cab, you can try phoning:

Conakry taxi tips
- If you’re taking a shared taxi, prepare for the departure time to be unpredictable. It can take up to 3 hours for a shared taxi to fill up before the driver departs.
- Always carry cash in the local currency of Guinean Francs (GNF) to pay for your taxi. You may need to go to a bank to withdraw cash, as ATMs are hard to find in the city.
- If you can, avoid travelling during rush hour in the morning and evening. There is a lot of dust and traffic at these times that can make the journey unpleasant – especially when travelling by taxi bike.
- It’s not obligatory to tip your Conakry taxi driver, but you can if you're pleased with the service.
Wheelchair-accessibility taxis in Conakry
Regrettably, Conakry taxis you’ll find on the streets are not readily equipped for wheelchair users. If you require a fully accessible vehicle, we suggest contacting a private tour operator or local travel agency, specifying your requirements; they should be able to offer an appropriate vehicle in their fleet or refer you to a partner of theirs who can accommodate your needs. Planning ahead of time is recommended to ensure a suitable vehicle is secured for your comfort and safety.
Conakry taxi safety and complaints
Taxis in Conakry are deemed unsafe by international standards. Many government-led reviews of Conakry transport would suggest booking a private transfer to get around the city safely, with a trustworthy provider. This is because the vehicles used for taxi services are not well maintained and many local drivers offering cab services are unlicensed and/or uninsured.
If you do choose to take a local taxi and experience any issues, you can contact the local police at +224 (622) 039 258. Make a note of your driver’s name and car’s licence plate to support your claim.
